Lynn
Main Floor Remodel
Dilemma
Lynn was ready to completely redo her main level. First and foremost, she wanted a brand new kitchen with tall cabinets and, in particular, to trade in her 1990’s black granite countertops for quartz. In addition, the kitchen in general, didn’t have enough storage space for all of her cooking gadgets.
She wanted dark stain on her hardwood floors. And since they already had solid hardwood throughout the main level, that was an easy fix. The existing trim was a dated golden oak stain, so a fresh coat of white paint was also in order.
She liked the existing kitchen footprint, with exception to where her dishwasher was located. The builder had originally angled it under the countertop between two adjoining corners so that it was impossible stand on either side whenever the door was open. The only access was to stand in front of it and lean over to load or unload it. Not only was it awkward, furthermore it was dangerous.
And lastly, as far as the kitchen area was concerned, Lynn is also a coffee aficionado. So a dedicated coffee area was really important.
Suggestions
I asked her about their unused formal dining room off of the kitchen that had become a catch-all for what-have-you. As many millennial homeowners will tell you, they just don’t buy-in to a space that’s only used a few times a year. But they weren’t sure what to do with the space. I suggested that they repurpose it into a pantry. And in addition to that, we could repurpose some of the existing kitchen cabinets and granite countertop and add a dedicated coffee bar into the new space, as well.
The ‘original formal living room’ was being used as a collaborative space for the kids to study. They were sharing a large dining table and didn’t have a personal space to store their individual work. She thought the kids would appreciate their own study space even though they were sharing the same room.
The entryway had never been furnished, so I suggested that and the addition of an updated chandelier. And finally, the family room was ready for a makeover.
Take a look at the ‘before’ and ‘after’ progression of Lynn’s newly created spaces.
